Gunmen exchange fire with police in Yerevan as standoff continues

Xinhua, July 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The armed men who took over a police station in Yerevan on July 17 burned three police vehicles and exchanged fire with law enforcers on Tuesday, according to Armenpress.

Two members of the armed group were wounded early Tuesday morning during an exchange of gunfire with the National Security Services, said Armenpress, adding that they have been moved to a local hospital.

In the exchange of fire, the gunmen burned three police vehicles in the police station they seized. The group had torched another police van on Sunday, said the report.

The armed men have barricaded themselves in a police station in Armenia' s capital, refusing to lay down their weapons even after releasing all the hostages they previously held after storming the station.

The heavily armed group demanded the release of the radical opposition leader Zhirayr Sefilyan who was arrested in June on suspicion of having tried to topple the government. Another demand of the gunmen is the resignation of President Serzh Sargsyan.

The group of gunmen had stormed the headquarters of a police station in Khorenatsi street in Yerevan on July 17, killing one policeman and injuring several others. Endit
