China on blue alert for typhoon Mirinae

Typhoon Mirinae is expected to hit southern China's Hainan Island around midnight Tuesday, with the National Meteorological Center (NMC) issuing a blue-alert.

Mirinae, China's third typhoon this year, was detected 150 km off the coast of Qionghai City, Hainan, at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Mirinae's maximum wind speed is 18 meters per second, but it is forecast to reach 23-25 meters per second as it makes landfall in Hainan, according to the the NMC.

The typhoon will bring gales and torrential rain to Hainan, the Leizhou Peninsula, southwestern Guangdong, and southeastern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

China's has a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow and blue. Endi
