Brussels airport starts runway renovation

Xinhua, July 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Major renovation on the Brussels airport runway began Tuesday to guarantee safety of aircraft movements, the airport said.

The renovation is expected to last two months, during which the asphalt surface layers and the drainage system of the runway will be completely renewed. New energy-efficient LED lighting will also be installed to replace the current halogen lamps.

Runways are expected to be thoroughly renovated every 30 years to guarantee the safe takeoffs and landings of aircrafts.

There will be no cancellation to flights due to the renovation.

Barring unforeseen technical hitches or weather conditions, the renovation shall be completed on Sept. 25.

Brussels airport was hit by twin suicide bombings during terror attacks on March 22, which killed at least 32 people. It was not until June 17 that the departure hall, which was badly damaged during the explosion, reopened for travelers. Endit
