UN envoy roots for dialogue to restore peace in war-torn states

Xinhua, July 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) secretary general for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, has said that dialogue is the only practical means of restoring peace in war-torn countries.

Cheikh Ahmed was speaking in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, where he represented UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the 27th edition of the Arab League Summit.

He cited the situation in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya and Sudan and the efforts made by the UN to guarantee stability in these regions.

The problem of large numbers of refugees and migrants, he said, had henceforth created a lot of challenges for Arab states as countries of origin, transit and destination.

The special envoy noted that cooperation between the UN and the Arab League had considerably increased in the last few years and this was marked by the holding in Cairo of a historic consultative meeting between members of the UN Security Council and the Arab League.

He further expressed his satisfaction with the efforts deployed by members of the Arab League to support diplomacy and mediation led by the UN. Endit
