7 int'l companies bid for mega power project in Jordan

Xinhua, July 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordan said on Tuesday that seven international companies including European and Asian firms submitted bids for a power project of 160 million U.S. dollars, state-run Petra news agency reported.

The project requires increasing the capacity of the country's electricity grid by an additional 1,000 megawatts, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ibrahim Saif said.

The project will strengthen Jordan's state National Electric Power Company and help the kingdom adopt renewable energy projects, according to the minister.

A technical committee was formed to examine the bids.

Jordan, a country that imports about 97 percent of its energy needs, is working on several energy projects as it aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix to 10 percent by 2020. Endit
