U.S. stresses continued support for Lebanon

Xinhua, July 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

The U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Elizabeth Richard stressed on Tuesday her country's continued support for the Lebanese army and people and highlighted the importance of the American-Lebanese partnership, the embassy said in a statement.

"One key aspect of America's support is our assistance to the Lebanese army and the security services. America has been, is, and will continue to be the country's foremost security partner," said Richard in a statement after meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam at the Grand Serail.

The statement said since 2005, the U.S. has provided about 1.4 billion dollars in security assistance and critical training to the Lebanese armed forces, 150 million dollars in foreign military financing, and an additional 60 million dollars to strengthen border security efforts.

The U.S. diplomat also highlighted the importance of the American-Lebanese partnership, adding that "it is important for the Lebanese people, the American people, and the region."

On the influx of refugees mainly from Syria into Lebanon, Richard said the U.S. is the largest single donor of humanitarian assistance to Lebanon.

"I understand that Lebanon faces a myriad of political, economic, and humanitarian challenges... America will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with you as you confront these challenges," she said. Endit
