Macedonians told to be "extremely cautious" in Turkey

Xinhua, July 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday asked its citizens to be extremely cautious when traveling to Turkey where an attempted military coup d'etat took place on Friday night.

"All Macedonian nationals that are currently in Turkey should stay in safe locations. They shouldn't leave their hotel rooms or the place where they are staying and should avoid mass gatherings on public locations", the ministry announced in a statement.

A large number of Macedonian citizens are currently on vacation in Turkey. A number of Macedonian children from the town Tetovo are in a camp near Istanbul.

The primary concern for the Macedonian diplomats in Turkey is to secure the safety of all Macedonian nationals, said Macedonian Ambassador in Turkey Zvonko Mucunski.

"The situation is still very complicated. There are security operations that are underway. We remain following the situation", Mucunski said.

All flights between Skopje and Istanbul were cancelled on Saturday morning. There is no information when air traffic between the two cities will be back to normal. Endit
