Cyprus says its National Guard is watching Turkey situation

Xinhua, July 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Cypriot National Guard is watching the situation in Turkish following a thwarted military coup in Turkey, a government spokesman said Saturday.

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, who is in Mongolia for an Asia-Europe meeting, has been briefed about the development, said Victor Papadopoulos.

Anastasiades has instructed his deputy, President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris, to confer with the leadership of the National Guard and the foreign minister.

According to Turkish media and social media information posted by Turkish Cypriots, crowds gathered outside a building housing Turkish diplomatic representatives in the occupied part of Cyprus to denounce the coup.

Turkey is keeping about 40,000 troops in the northern part of Cyprus where it occupied in 1974 in reaction to a coup by the military rulers of Greece at the time. Endi
