Zambia arrests over 1,500 on drug offences in Q2

Authorities in Zambia arrested a total of 1,581 people during the second quarter of the year on drug-related offences, the country's anti-drug agency said on Friday.

The number of people arrested during the period represents an 18 percent increase from the first quarter, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) said.

The agency said in a statement that of the total number of people arrested, 1,471 were males while 110 were females.

It added that 30 of those arrested were foreigners while 72 were juveniles.

Out of those arrested, 394 have been convicted for drug related offense, the statement said.

The anti-drug agency also seized 26.98 tons of cannabis during the period, a 32.3 percent increase from the first quarter.

Other drugs seized included 23.4 kilograms of Ephedrine, 18.43 kilograms of Mira, 16.23 grams of cocaine, 2.96 grams of diazepam and 1.33 grams of heroin. Endit
