Britain's new Prime Minister Theresa May arrived at Downing Street on Wednesday after gaining consent from Queen Elizabeth II.

Speaking outside Downing Street, she said she would lead a "One Nation" government.

She added that her government would not be led by the interests of the "privileged few."

David Cameron formally offered his resignation to the Queen earlier after making a farewell speech outside Downing Street.

Cameron said being prime minister has been the "greatest honour of my life" in his final remarks.

May became Britain's second female prime minister in history, after Margaret Thatcher.

She is expected to appoint her first cabinet in the coming days, with the task of uniting her party after a bruising leadership campaign and negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union. Endit
