Theresa May is formally confirmed as British Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace by Queen Elizabeth II after David Cameron's resignation on Wednesday afternoon.

Theresa May is Britain's 76th prime minister.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying that Queen Elizabeth II has "graciously accepted" David Cameron's resignation as prime minister and first Lord of the Treasury.

Cameron said being prime minister had been "the greatest honour" of his life before he formally resigned.

May is expected to make her maiden speech as prime minister outside Downing Street, and outline her plans for her government. Endit
