Zambia confiscates 162 kg of ivory in Q1

Wildlife authorities in Zambia on Thursday revealed that the country confiscated 162 kilograms of ivory in the first quarter of 2016 as the country recorded a decline in wildlife-related offenses.
The Department of National Parks said this was a reduction when compared to 342.7 kilograms of ivory confiscated in the last quarter of 2015.
"The Ministry of Tourism and Arts has observed a reduction in the number of wildlife-related offenses recorded in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the last quarter of 2015,"Sakabilo Kalembwe, the ministry's spokesperson said in a statement.
He said the department recorded 379 arrests during the period compared to 624 arrests in the last quarter of 2015.
The department, he added, also confiscated 252 firearms in the first quarter of this year compared to 275 during the previous quarter while over 1,000 wire snares were confiscated compared to 2,158 in the last quarter of 2015. Endit
