Burundi President says will continue to fight against enemies of peace, unity

Xinhua, July 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has said the country will continue to fight against enemies of peace and unity and build cohesion.

The leader made the remarks in a celebration event held at Prince Louis Rwagasore stadium on Friday as the country celebrated its 54th independence anniversary.

According to him, there are "still enemies" of peace and unity in Burundi as it was the case during the struggle for independence.

He indicated that enemies attempted to jeopardize independence gains for decades and have not yet surrendered.

He said that the Independence Day was an opportunity to evaluate achievements of the past and plan for the future in order to consolidate independence gains.

Some foreign delegations including former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, Ugandan Vice-President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and Gabonese Prime Minister Daniel Ona Ondo attended the event, during which a parade staged by civilians, majorettes, soldiers and police agents was held.

Burundi gained independence from the Belgian colonial rule on July 1, 1962. Endit
