Six men died in a sewer manhole in Belarus, the Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Wednesday.

A local resident went down to the cesspit about six meters deep near his home in Krupskij district on Tuesday evening, it said.

While cleaning the well, the man lost consciousness and fell to the bottom. His neighbors tried to help him with three men going downstairs one by one, but they all lost consciousness and fell down, it added.

Rescuers took out bodies of the four men and physicians ascertained the cause of their death.

During the rescue operation, two emergency workers were poisoned by vapors accumulated in the well and were hospitalized. The two emergency workers died later in the hospital.
