Number of deaths exceeds births in Spain in 2015

Xinhua, June 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

For the first time in 74 years, the number of deaths was higher than the number of births in Spain in 2015, according to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics on Thursday.

The study showed there were 2,753 more deaths than births over the year.

The year 2015 saw 419,109 babies born in Spain, 8,486 fewer than in 2014. It is the lowest number of births since 2002, due partly to the fact the average age when women have their first child continues to increase and now stands at 31.9 years.

Meanwhile, 422,276 people died in 2015, 26,446 more than in 2014 and that 6.7 percent rise in mortality is the sharpest increase since 1971.

The increase of the death rate provoked a slight drop in the average lifespan for Spaniards, which nevertheless stands at 82.7 years. Women enjoyed an average life of 85.4 years compared to 79.9 years for men. Endit
