Roundup: Service sector tops job creation chart in Ghana

Besides being the largest and fastest growing sector in the economy, the service sector has come up as the top job provider in Ghana, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has said.

In 2014, Ghana generated 207, 492 jobs with the service sector alone created 181,641 or 87 percent of the jobs.

Second to the service sector in job creation was the industry sector, which accounted for 24,097 or 12 percent of the jobs, while the agriculture sector provided 1,756 or 1.0 percent of the total jobs.

The data, which formed part of the maiden Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES) report issued by the GSS this month, is meant to measure how the growing economy translated into jobs.

The Ministry of Communications released in April a list of 600,000 jobs the government said it had created since President John Dramani Mahama took office in 2012.

Out of the 181,641 jobs in the service sector, wholesale and retail trade alone provided 84,479 jobs, followed by accommodation and food with 20,063 jobs and the other services came third with 19,663 jobs.

The manufacturing sub-sector provided the highest number of jobs in the industry sector with 19,133 jobs, followed by mining and quarrying with 1,756 jobs during the year under review.

In the agriculture sector, crop production provided 943 out of the total 1756 jobs generated, while livestock and poultry generated 503 jobs; forestry and logging created 125 jobs.

The government said a total of 69 companies were established between 2013 and 2015, leading to the employment of 16,372 people.

Youth unemployment in Ghana however remains high as latest labor market reports say about 48 percent of the youth in the country who are between 15-24 years are jobless. Endit
