Nigerian parliament moves to probe extension of EU ban on dried beans exportation

The Nigerian parliament on Wednesday said it will probe the recent extension of ban on Nigeria's exportation of dried beans into European countries.

Dried beans from Nigeria were reported to have contained high level of pesticides considered to be too dangerous to human health, causing the European Union to slam an export suspension measure on it in June last year.

This month, the ban was extended by three years, citing Nigeria's inability to provide substantial guarantees that adequate official control systems have been put in place to ensure compliance with food law requirements.

The Nigerian parliament said it will look into the ban and urged relevant agencies of government to collaborate with each other to resolve the issue before close of the initial deadline on June 30.

The parliament leadership, while expressing concern over the negative effects of the extended ban of dried bean export on the Nigerian economy, mandated its committees on Agriculture, and Commerce and Industry to investigate the ban extension and report their findings to it within two weeks for further legislative action.
