Croatian president calls for parliament dissolution, early election

Croatian President on Friday urged the parliament speaker to dissolve the assembly to pave a way for an early election after consultations with parliamentary parties.

Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said no any party group enjoyed a majority support of 76 lawmakers which was necessary for forming a new cabinet following the ouster of the Tihomir Oreskovic cabinet on Thursday.

An absolute majority of parliament were in favor of an early election, she said at a news conference after holding consultations with parliamentary parties.

The parliament is expected to adopt a decision on its self-dissolution on Monday, then the president would call the election, according to local media.

According to laws an election must be held no earlier than 30 days and no later than 60 days after parliament was dissolved.

Although Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) hoped it can form a new HDZ-led cabinet, but the opposition, led by the Social Democratic party, managed to gather 85 signatures of members of the 151-seat parliament supporting its dissolution. Endit
