Pakistan wants peaceful solution to border issue with Afghanistan: military

Xinhua, June 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Pakistan military said on Wednesday that the country wants to peacefully resolve border issue with neighbouring Afghanistan.

One Pakistani soldier and one Afghan soldier were killed and several people on both sides injured in an exchange of firing along Torkham, one of the main border crossings, between the two countries, over the past four days.

The firing started Saturday after the construction of a gate by Pakistan on its side of the border.

"As Pakistan is determined to ensure peace in the region, we want to solve the border issue peacefully and we were in contact with the Afghan embassy," an army spokesman said at a news conference.

He said the border management was not an easy job.

The army spokesman also spoke about the army's achievements against the militants in the tribal and some settled areas and said the government writ has been established in the tribal regions and the northern Swat valley, which had once been under the influence of the militant groups.

"The operation would continue in some pockets to eliminate terrorists," he said. Endit
