Downpours in six provincial-level regions in south China since Tuesday have claimed five lives and with one person unaccounted for, said the Ministry of Civil Affairs Wednesday.

Floods, wind and hail in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Sichuan and Guizhou, have led to the evacuation of more than 7,500 people and nearly 6,100 are in need of basic necessities, the ministry said.

Over 1,900 houses have been damaged and 16,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed, causing direct economic losses of 330 million yuan (50 million U.S. dollars). Endi
