Facilitator of DR Congo dialogue to meet opposition leader in Brussels

Xinhua, June 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

The facilitator in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) national dialogue, Edem Kodjo, said on Tuesday in Kinshasa that he will soon head to Brussels to meet with Etienne Tshisekedi, the president of the main opposition party in DR Congo, Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS).

Addressing the press in the Congolese capital, the facilitator promised to "exercise patience in the conduct of his functions."

Kodjo, who was appointed to the position by the African Union, said the dialogue he is facilitating is not different from that envisaged under resolution no. 2277 of the Security Council.

The facilitator promised to do everything possible to ensure everyone participates in the national dialogue.

Participants at an opposition meeting held in Brussels between June 9 and 10 accepted the principle of dialogue, but not in the format outlined by President Joseph Kabila.

They insisted that dialogue convened under the facilitation of the international community should lead to political change and organization of presidential as well as legislative elections within the constitutional timeline.

Tshisekedi, who previously served as DR Congo prime minister, contested the 2011 presidential elections and declared himself as the president of the republic. Endit
