Austria saw a strong 56-percent year-over-year increase in its net immigration rate in 2015, largely on the back of asylum seekers having fled from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.
Statistics Austria stated in a press release Tuesday that 214,410 people entered Austria from abroad while 101,343 left the country, leaving a positive net migration rate of 113,067 people.
This brings the total proportion of foreign nationals living in the country to 14.6 percent, or 1.27 million people. About half of these are citizens of fellow EU member states.
The largest group of foreign nationals was once again Germans, followed by Serbian and Turkish nationals.
In terms of those who arrived only in 2015 however, Syrians made up the highest number with 21,903 people, followed by Afghan nationals (18,609 people) and Iraqis (10,002 people). These mostly came through the large migrant influx into Europe in the latter half of the year.
From more traditional sources, the highest influx was seen from Romanians (8,250 people), Hungarians (7,535 people), and Germans (6,422 people). Endit
