Austrian population surpasses 8.7 mln over 2015

Xinhua, June 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

The population of Austria surpassed the 8.7-million mark over the course of 2015 in most part due to strong immigration, Statistics Austria revealed on Tuesday.

The latest figures show the national population reached 8,700,471 people at the turn of the new year, 115,545 people or 1.35 percent more than a year earlier.

The statistics office said about 98 percent of the growth was attributable to immigration, while an overall positive birth balance also played a smaller role.

The national capital of Vienna again recorded the strongest population growth, in keeping with recent trends, its population growing 2.49 percent or 42,889 people to a total of 1.84 million.

Notable population increases were also seen in the western states of Vorarlberg (1.47 percent), Tyrol (1.42 percent), and Salzburg (1.35 percent). All other states also recorded positive growth. Endit
