Xinhua, June 14, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Red Cross in Macedonia declared on Tuesday, the World Blood Donor Day that Macedonian blood donors are getting younger and the number of women donors has increased.

According to data of the Red Cross in Macedonia, blood is donated by 25,000-30,000 citizens on a yearly level, about 900 blood donations are realized by volunteers. The law in Macedonia allows citizens which are 18-65 years old to donate blood.

"The average age of blood donors has dropped, and the number of women donors has increased. In high schools, blood can be donated by 17.5 year olds, with parent consent, and citizens older than 65 can also donate if they are healthy," said the Red Cross.

Annually, there are about 20 citizens who get acknowledgements because they donated blood many times.

The Red Cross and the Institute of Transfusion Medicine in Macedonian would mark the World Blood Donor Day under the theme "Blood Connects Us All." On this occasion an event would be held at the Mother Teresa Museum. An exhibition of posters from the competition on the topic 'Blood donation, youth, humanity' will be showcased there.

Every year on June 14, countries around the world celebrate the World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to raise the awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood. Endit
