3 Maldivians join extremist group in Syria

Three Maldivians from Addu City in Southern Malives, have been recruited by an extremist militant group in Syria, Maldivian local newspaper reported Sunday.

The three persons left their country on June 3 and entered Syria later, said the report.

According to the report, one of the men informed his family before his arrival in the war-torn Middle Eastern country. As what he said, he would contact with his family after completing training. It is unclear for now which group they have joined.

Only several days before they recruits for Jihad, Maldivian government had raised the concern on terrorism. President Abdulla Yameen submitted a policy paper on terrorism and violent extremism to the People's Majlis, asking for "further steps to be taken to address the issue."

Local media cited the report of Mumbai Mirror saying, about 150 Maldivians have joined extremist organizations, while at least six of them are believed to have been killed in battles. Endit
