Panama's media show disappointment after loss to Argentina

Xinhua, June 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Several of Panama's media showed their disappointment on Saturday when they reviewed Panama's 5-0 defeat to Argentina on Friday evening.

It was Panama's second game in Group D of the 2016 Centennial Copa America taking place in the United States.

Panamanian daily La Prensa used the headline "Panama couldn't against Argentina", reflecting the disappointment felt after it had looked likely that the national side may stand a chance against the runners up in the last World Cup.

The newspaper highlighted that Argentina won with three goals from soccer star Lionel Messi during a match where Panama played with 10 men for a large part of the game after Anibal Godoy was sent off in the first half.

"Messi struck us down" was the headline on the morning daily El Panama America, summing up the most important turning point of Friday's match.

"Argentina woke up with Messi's entrance ... and they took advantage of an opponent with inferior numbers," wrote the newspaper about the match which allowed Argentina to secure their passage to the tournament's quarter finals.

The match was played in the Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago and at the start of the match, Panama's fans were hopeful for a positive result after beating Bolivia 2-1 in their opening match.

In order to be in with a chance of qualifying for the quarter finals, Panama has to win the last match in the group stage against Chile on Tuesday. Endit
