Finnish finance minister defeated in party congress

The Finnish National Coalition Party changed its chairman at party convention in Lappeenranta, southern Finland, on Saturday.

Interior Minister Petteri Orpo defeated incumbent party chairman, Finance Minister Alexander Stubb, in a vote 441 against 361, in the second round of voting.

Stubb had been elected two years ago in a wave of enthusiasm at the party congress in Lahti. But there was growing criticism against Stubb soon, mainly for lack of interest in domestic issues and also insufficient factual knowledge that led to embarrassing situations.

Timo Soikkanen, former professor of political history at Turku University, said that Orpo "knows Finland better than Stubb," and he is also more interested in social policy than Stubb. Endit
