Locals detain Taliban key commander in N. Afghan province: official

Villagers in Balkhab district of the northern Saripul province attacked and captured a Taliban key commander and shadow district governor on Thursday, provincial governor Mohammad Zahir Wahdat said Saturday.

"The Taliban key commander Hashimi Qaraish who had served as shadow district governor for Balkhab district was captured by villagers on Thursday while he was collecting taxes from the locals," Wahdat told reporters here.

He added that the arrested Taliban commander who was involved in anti-government activities in Saripul province over the past four years, has been handed over to local authorities and presently is in government custody.
