Republic of Congo rejects abuse claims levelled against its soldiers

Republic of Congo government on Thursday rejected abuse claims levelled against its soldiers in Central African Republic in a report prepared by Human Rights Watch (HRW).

"HRW report is not credible. It is biased," Government Spokesman Thierrry Moungalla said during a joint press conference with Justice Minister Pierre Mabiala in Brazzaville.

"The government reiterates that Republic of Congo is a country that respects its international engagements, as well as its internal legal framework. In this regard, the government strongly condemns any violation of human rights by any of its officers deployed on a peacekeeping mission," Mabiala said.

"Authorities will do everything to ensure suspects are charged. In this regard, a special court to handle the issue will be set up in Brazzaville," the justice minister affirmed.

A Human Rights Watch report released on Tuesday indicated that Congolese soldiers serving under the UN Mission in Central African Republic killed 18 people, among them women and children, between 2013 and 2015. Endit
