Seventeen countries are participating in NATO exercise BALTOPS in Baltic Sea to demonstrates NATO's resolve to defend the region, NATO said Monday.
The exercise, led by the United States, will feature anti-submarine warfare, air defense, intercepting suspect vessels and amphibious landings.
It started on Sunday and will run until June 20, involving 5,600 troops. Fourteen NATO Allies are joining this year as well as NATO partners Finland, Georgia and Sweden.
A total of 49 ships, 61 aircraft, one submarine and a combined amphibious landing force will take part in the drills.
"This exercise represents an important opportunity for our forces, as allies and partners, to enhance our ability to work together and strengthen capabilities required to maintain regional security," Vice Admiral James Foggo III, the Commander of Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, was quoted as saying in a NATO statement.
"The annual BALTOPS exercise is not held in response to any specific threat," NATO said. Endit
