Belarus to hold parliamentary elections in September

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has issued decrees scheduling the dates of parliamentary elections, the press service of the Belarusian leader said on Monday.
The elections to the Chamber of Representatives of the National Assembly of the sixth convocation are scheduled for Sept. 11, 2016 and the elections to the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the sixth convocation will be conducted in the period from June 18 until Sept. 18, 2016.
One deputy from each of the 110 districts of the country shall be elected to the Chamber of Representatives. Sixty-four people will be elected to the Council of the Republic -- 8 from each of the provinces and the city of Minsk (the decision is made by regional councils of deputies and Minsk City Council), the last 8 senators will be chosen by the president.
Any citizen who is residing in Belarus and is 21 years old or above can be elected as a member of the House of Representatives. Any citizen of Belarus who has reached 30 years of age and lived on the territory of the region, the city of Minsk not less than five years can be elected as a member of the Council of the Republic.
In the following two months the election committees will be formed. The nomination of candidates will take place until August 1, their registration - up to August 11. Then election campaign will start, leading up to the parliamentary elections.
Earlier, Alexander Lukashenko pledged to support "fair and honest" candidates, who advocate the independence of the country. The EU and the U.S. have repeatedly stated that the further development of relations with Belarus will depend on how Belarus carries out parliamentary elections in 2016. Endit
