Unknown gunmen kill female journalist in Somalia

Xinhua, June 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Unknown gunmen shot dead a female journalist working for Somalia's state-run radio and television on Sunday evening in the capital, Mogadishu.

Sagal Salad Osman, a producer for Radio Mogadishu was killed when armed men approached her outside a university and opened fire in Hodan district.

The gunmen then fled immediately before police came, while the journalist died in a hospital in the city. Investigations are underway.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA) on Monday condemned the killing.

"SIMHA calls upon relevant authorities to speed up the investigation process and bring to book those responsible before justice," the union said in a statement.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the killing but Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab has targeted Somalia's state media staff in the past.

Radio Mogadishu has lost several staff members in the hands of Al-Shabaab.

President Mohamud condemned the murder of Osman, saying his government would work hard to "find perpetrators of this crime to face justice."

"Those who harm the innocent people should be held accountable and will be brought to justice as it happened before," Mohamud said.

Osman is the second female journalist to be killed in Somalia in the last six months.

In December 2015, Hinda Haji Mohamed, who was also a female journalist for Radio Mogadishu, was killed in a car bombing in Mogadishu in an attack claimed by Al-Shabaab. Endit
