12 killed in traffic accident in S. India

Twelve persons died and several others were injured on Friday in a multiple vehicle collision in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, said police.

The incident took place in the district of Krishnagir, when a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck whose driver lost control of his vehicle on the downward slope. A car that was coming behind the bus was also hit by the truck.

Most of the deceased were bus passengers and the injured have been admitted to a nearby government hospital after rescuers and police rushed to the scene, some 260 km from the state capital Chennai.

Traffic accidents are common in India. According to the World Health Organization, at least 200,000 are killed annually in India's road accidents. Endit
