Telecom firms to build submarine cable system in East Africa

Xinhua, June 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Telecom service providers on Thursday signed an agreement to build a high-capacity submarine cable system in East Africa, dubbed Djibouti Africa Regional Express (DARE).

In a joint statement, the seven telecom companies from East Africa and Middle East said the regional submarine cable system will provide high bandwidth services for Djibouti, Yemen, Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania.

"The DARE submarine cable system, spanning approximately 5,500 km, will connect Dar es Salam, Mombasa, Mogadishu, Bossaso, Berbera, Mocha and Djibouti," the statement said.

"The 100G cable system will deliver more than 60 Tbps of capacity," it added.

The project is expected to be completed by May 2018, according to the statement. Endit
