2 officers shot, suspect contained in N. California home

Police contained a home in the late hours Wednesday after a gunman shot and wounded two officers in Fremont, a city in Northern California.

At around 10:30 p.m. local time (0530 GMT Thursday), according to KCBS, a radio station serving the San Francisco Bay Area, police contacted the suspect, who had apparently broken into a residence and barricaded himself. The gunman reportedly refused to give up.

The incident began during a traffic stop at about 1:30 p.m. (2030 GMT)in the Irvington area of Fremont, more than 60 km south of San Francisco, where the suspect backed his pickup truck into a Fremont Police Department officer, exchanged gunfire with the latter and hit him with one shot.

Some 10 minutes later, in a neighborhood several blocks away, the gunman engaged in a shootout with a group of officers and a detective was hit twice.

The two officers were sent to a trauma center. Fremont police department spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said the first officer, with over a year of experience with the department, was out of surgery but remained in critical condition. The second, with about 10 years of experience, was in stable condition.

While the sheriff's office of Alameda County, where Fremont is located, took over the search for the suspect, hundreds of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies and nearby cities in the Bay Area joined the effort with helicopters, drones and dogs to focus on an area of about 10 acres, or nearly 40,500 square meters.

Residents were told to stay home and work with officers going door-to-door.

Officers on the scene to contain the residence where the suspect was in hiding told a reporter that they would not be in a hurry to get the shooter.

"This is obviously a very dangerous individual," Sergeant Ray Kelly of Alameda County Sheriff's Office said earlier. "He has already showed a propensity for violence and a willingness to hurt two police officers."

The shooting in Fremont took place three and a half hours after a murder-suicide incident at the engineering building of the University of California, Los Angeles, in Southern California, where two people were killed, including the shooter. Endi
