1st LD Writethru: Chinese shares close higher Thursday

Chinese stocks closed higher on Thursday, led by brokerages and Chinese spirits.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index increased 0.4 percent to close at 2,925.23 points. The smaller Shenzhen index closed 0.64 percent higher at 10,274.03 points.

The ChiNext Index, which tracks China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.91 percent to close at 2,188.56 points.

Combined trading on the two bourses fell to 560.55 billion yuan (about 85.33 billion U.S. dollars) from 653.99 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Nearly 60 shares surged by the daily limit of 10 percent. Stocks related to brokerages, Chinese spirits, graphene and electronic manufacturing were among the biggest winners.

Kweichow Moutai, the main brand of Chinese liquor, added 1.5 percent to end at 267.74 yuan.

Citic Securities, the country's leading brokerage, gained 0.18 percent to finish at 16.6 yuan.

Bucking the trend, banking shares posted lackluster performances. China Merchants Bank retreated 0.56 percent at 17.73 yuan. Bank of China, the country's third-largest lender, dipped 0.3 percent to 3.33 yuan. Endi
