Immigrants helping drive New Zealand new car sales

Immigration and a strong economy in the largest city of Auckland drove record new car sales in New Zealand last month, the Motor Industry Association (MIA) said Thursday.
"There were 11,180 new vehicles sold in the month of May, the strongest month of May since the MIA began collating sales data in 1975," MIA chief executive officer David Crawford said in a statement.
New vehicle registrations in May were up 11.4 percent year on year and year-to-date sales were up 5.3 percent.
"Strong net immigration continues to be a key driver of increased registrations of new vehicles, along with Auckland's booming regional economy," said Crawford.
There were 7,502 passenger vehicle registrations and a May record of 3,678 commercial vehicle registrations.
Toyota was the overall market leader in May with 16 percent market share, followed by Ford on 14 percent and Holden on 10 percent. Endit
