1st LD: Strong quake strikes off western Indonesia, no tsunami alert issued

A shallow quake of 6.5 magnitude jolted West Sumatra province of western Indonesia earlier Thursday, but there was no potential for tsunami, official of Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency said.

The USGS reported the quake measuring 5.2 Richter scale.

The quake struck at 05 : 56 a.m. Jakarta time Thursday (2256 GMT Wednesday) with epicenter at (79 km southwest Pesisir Selatan of the province and depth at 72 km under sea bed, the official told Xinhua over phone.

Over one thousand people were killed when a 7.6 magnitude quake hit West Sumatra province in 2009.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire." Enditem
