France on Wednesday assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for June.
Ambassador Francois Delattre, permanent representative of France to the UN, told reporters here that discussions on peacekeeping will be one of the priorities of the work of this month.
He said the mandate of United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) will be renewed this month, and the Security Council has been studying the report from UN Secretary-General to strengthen the mission's capabilities to better fulfill its mandate.
Since its inception in 2013, the UN mission in Mali has lost more than 60 lives so far, making it the UN's deadliest active mission. In May alone, attacks targeted against MINUSMA have killed 12 peacekeepers and injured many more.
Under the UN Charter, the Security Council has the primary responsibility for maintaining peace and security in the world at large. It also bears the responsibility to work on the mandate of UN peacekeeping operations.
The Council is composed of five permanent members -- China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Federation -- and 10 non-permanent members that are elected in groups of five, with a tenure of two years on the council.
The presidency of the council rotates among its 15 member states based on the English-language alphabetical order of the countries' names on a monthly basis. Endit
