5 killed after truck topples on slum in northern India

Xinhua, June 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least five people were killed when a truck toppled on a slum in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, a police official said.

"The freak mishap happened early in the morning when the driver lost control of the speeding truck laden with sand and overturned on a slum at Haiderganj," he said, on condition of anonymity.

Haiderganj is located in Lucknow, the capital of the state.

All the victims were sleeping in the hutments of the slum at the time of the mishap, the official said, adding three were members of a same family.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he said.

India records the highest number of road accidents in the world, which claim the lives of more than 130,000 lives every year. Endit
