Nigerian assembly plants provide 75,000 vehicles in 2015: official

Xinhua, June 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nigerian assembly plants provided 75,000 vehicles for the local market in 2015, an official said Tuesday.

The figure represented 75 percent of an estimated 100,000 vehicles on the Nigerian market last year, said Aminu Jalal, the director general of the National Automotive Design and Development Council.

He however said the assembly plants "are not only producing but are also importing fully built units as an incentive as provided by the auto policy."

Under the auto policy in Nigeria, the concessionary vehicle imports are in proportion to the local production.

Jalal predicted a drop in local vehicle output in 2016 as a result of what he called a current foreign exchange scarcity in the sector.

According to him, many of the assembly plants are minimizing their operations because they are finding it difficult to source foreign exchange to import raw materials.

"This is the major challenge we are currently facing, but you know it is not limited to the auto industry; all manufacturers are affected," he said. Endit
