Somalia arrests Al-Shabaab militants on Mogadishu outskirts

Xinhua, June 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency on Tuesday arrested four Al-Shabaab militants on the outskirts of the capital Mogadishu, an official has said.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Security, Abdikamil Moalim Shukri, said the security forces seized a car carrying explosive materials, followed by an operation that led to the capture of the four militants in Elasha-biyaha, south of Mogadishu.

Shukri said the militants were planning to carry out attacks in Mogadishu.

The Somali army, backed by the African Union peacekeeping troops, has made progress in the fight against Al-Shabaab in the past months, however the Islamist group is still able to stage periodic attacks in the country. Endit
