Hodgson names England team, with place for star teenager Rashford

Xinhua, May 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

England coach Roy Hodgson Tuesday finally named the 23 players heading to Euro 2016 in France later this month.

Hodgson named 26 players last week, sparking an agonising 'guess who' drama among players, fans and footballing pundits. He had until Tuesday night to reduce the number down to 23 by a UEFA-set deadline.

And it was a dream day for Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford who Hodgson has included in his England squad for the Championships.

The teenager impressed Hodgson on Friday when the 18 year old scored in his international debut in a friendly match against Australia which England won 2-1.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is also named in the squad, but there was disappointment for Newcastle United's Andros Townsend and Leicester City's Danny Drinkwater who were both left out.

Drinkwater was the toast of a Leicester last month when he played a key role in helping Leicester win its first ever Premier League title and a mouth-watering place in next season's European Champions League.

Following is the England squad:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Tom Heaton (Burnley).

Defenders: Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), John Stones (Everton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Ross Barkley (Everton), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Strikers: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United). Endit
