Death toll in Ghana's boat accident rises to 13

Xinhua, May 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Rescue team near Ghana's southern town of Yeji, where a boat disaster occurred on Sunday, has retrieved five more bodies from the River Volta, bringing the number of the dead so far to 13.

Five more bodies, including a pregnant woman, were retrieved from the lake as at sunset on Monday.

The boat with up to 70 people on board was said to have hit a tree stump and sunk in the middle of their journey from Nantwekope to Yeji in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Confirming the incident and the death toll to local media, a local official said the boat had been overloaded.

A local boat owner said passengers often turned away from the use of life-saving jackets, claiming it was uncomfortable wearing them.

The accident comes barely two weeks after a similar disaster on the lake that claimed four lives. Endit
