Indonesia, Norway agree to boost energy, environment cooperation

Indonesia and Norway on Tuesday agreed to bring the cooperation in renewable energy, environment and fishery to a higher level, the Indonesian foreign minister said here.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo met with Foreign Minister of Norway Borge Brende at the State Palace on Tuesday.

"Norwegian foreign minister stated that nearly all of energy used in Norway resulted from hydro power," Minister Retno said after the meeting.

Indonesia is attempting to diversify sources of its energy to meet rising energy demand as the country's oil production has been dwindling.

On environment sector, President Widodo stressed the need of speeding up the two countries' cooperation on reducing carbon emission.

Indonesia and Norway have cooperated on reducing emission from deforestation and degradation or REDD plus since 2010.

Recently, Indonesia has taken measures to restore millions of hectares of peat land across the country, including establishment of a moratorium on opening of new palm oil plantations on peat land, in part to prevent forest fires from happening. Endit
