Albanian PM says ready for NATO military base

Xinhua, May 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has said that Albania is ready for a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military base in the country, local media reported on Tuesday.

Rama made the comments at the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Tirana on Monday, Albanian Daily News reported. The forum is a gathering of experts and lawmakers from NATO member nations.

The Albanian prime minister also said that becoming a member of NATO has been "a historic big bang which has ultimately defined a new future for the Albanian people."

It was in a sense a removal of the border for Albania, he said.

He also voiced support for Montenegro's bid for NATO membership, saying that it is "a very important strategic step" for the alliance and its open door policy.

Montenegro signed the accession protocol to join NATO on May 19 and is expected to become a NATO member once the protocol has been ratified by the 28 member states. Endi
