3 killed, 3 missing in boat capsizal in India

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three people were killed and three others went missing after an overcrowded boat capsized in India's eastern state of Bihar, officials said Friday.

The boat capsized on Thursday night in the river Ganga at Manihari in Katihar district, about 305 km east of Patna city, the capital of Bihar.

"Three bodies have been fished out so far, while as rescue and search operation by disaster response force men is still going on for the missing three," Lalan Ji, a senior official posted in Katihar told media.

Officials said 26 people were on board at the country made boat at the time of its capsizal.

"The boat lost its balance apparently due to overload and overturned in the river," Ji said.

Following the incident, 20 persons reportedly swam across the river safely, locals said.

Last week 18 people were killed in a similar boat accident in the river Bhagirathi (Hooghly) in West Bengal state. Endit
