Campaign to control prices of basic commodities launched in Burkina Faso

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso's Industry and Trade ministry has launched a campaign to control prices of basic commodities across the entire national territory, an official source said Thursday.

The operation that will last for a month, is aimed at ensuring that regulations on prices, manufacturing and quality are respected.

The campaign will target importers, producers, wholesalers and retailers. Emphasis will be placed on products such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, milk, flour, soap and butane gas, the ministry said in the statement.

After the first day of the campaign on Wednesday, it was noted that prices of sugar varied from 500 to 600 CFA Francs (between 0.8 to 1 U.S. dollar) per kilogram, while a 50 kg bag of rice was being sold between 16,750 CFA Francs to 18,000 CFA Francs, and a three-liter bottle of cooking oil was going for between 2,750 to 2,800 CFA Francs.

It was also discovered that prices of products were not clearly labelled. Ministry inspectors were also forced to carry away products that had already expired. Endit
