At least 11 people including two children were killed in a head-on collision between a fast moving truck and a jeep in India's western state of Rajasthan, officials said Friday.
The accident took place Thursday night near the Pasund village in Rajsamand district, about 335 km south of Jaipur city, the capital of Rajasthan.
"Last night a truck collided with a jeep on national highway-8 in Pasund village here, resulting in killing 11 people travelling in the jeep," an official posted at Rajsamand said. "The deceased were returning from neighbouring Bhilwara district after attending a function."
Preliminary investigations carried out by police suggest the accident was caused due to truck driver's fault.
Reports said the driver fled from the spot following the accident.
Police officials said the jeep was completely damaged in the accident and bodies of victims were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem.
Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
Global Road Safety Report - 2015 released by WHO last year said India accounts for more than 200,000 deaths annually due to road accidents. Endit
