Winning lottery ticket worth 30 million USD unclaimed in Australia

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

The hunt to find the owner of a 30 million U.S. dollar lottery-winning ticket has been narrowed to the small Australia town of Leongatha, after the monster Oz Lotto jackpot went unclaimed this week.

The mystery winner might not yet know they're 30 million U.S. dollars better off, and Oz Lotto can't name the winner because the ticket wasn't registered to a regular account.

The ticket was still unclaimed on Friday, after it was announced on Tuesday that the winning ticket was issued in Leongatha, a town of just 3,500 people.

The revelation apparently sent townspeople into a "frenzy," but local newsagent Pater Watchorn said it could have been purchased by someone passing through the town.

He told News Corp that the newsagency sold more than 500 tickets for the 30 million U.S. dollars draw.

"It could have been anyone," Watchorn said, "Now it's getting out people are saying 'Oh sugar, it must be me'."

Watchorn said he hoped it was in fact a local who purchased the winning ticket, as the town's residents had been affected by the recent milk price crisis which was pushing farmers out of business.

"It's already been very good for the town - for the area," Watchorn said.

"Leongatha is in trouble with the dairy industry, so this has been a good news story." Endit
